Silent show of strength

A sombre mood swept the streets of Brunswick as up to ten thousand people marched to remember Jill Meagher. Angus Thompson reports
THOUSANDS of people have turned out to march through Brunswick in memory of Jill Meagher.
Sydney Rd has been brought to a stand still by Melburnians taking up the width of the busy road in a protest of solidarity for the 29-year-old local woman, whose body was found in a shallow grave 50km north west of Melbourne.
Men and women hoisted single white roses amongst the crowd which stretched hundreds of metres from Moreland Rd to Brunswick Rd.
Many carried flowers, photos of the late Ms Meagher and placards with slogans urging peace and harmony as they walked from Moreland Road to Brunswick Rd.

Irish women Mairead Kelleher, 23, and Aisling Clancy, 27, said Ms Meagher's death had rocked Melbourne's tight-knit Irish community.
"She left home to make a better life for herself and then this happens," said Ms Kelleher, from St Kilda.

Both women held white roses for Ms Meagher.
There was a solemn crowd gathered at the Duchess bridal boutique which captured Ms Meagher on CCTV, flowers piled metres back from the shop front.
Casey Wiliams, 24, from McLeod, led the march.
"I'm not a friend but I am a young woman. It needs to be recognized its not safe for young women," she said.

Floral tributes are left outside a shop in Sydney Road, Brunswick, the location of the last sighting of Jill Meagher alive.
"It opens up your eyes."
Philip Werner expected just 10 people to show up at the corner Sydney and Moreland Roads yesterday when he sent out flyers in tribute of Ms Meagher.
But more than a thousand times that number flooded the busy Brunswick road in solidarity against a violent act on an innocent woman.
Mr Werner, a Brunswick resident and photographer, said he was amazed by the turnout.

"I just sent it around to a couple of news organizations and thought there would be 10 of us.
"How can you predict these things?" he said.
"My feeling is that everyone just turned up on their own accord."
He said the phenomenal turnout showed Melburnians stood for peace in the face of overwhelming tragedy.

"it's all about hope and peace. If all we have is fear and hate for people who do bad things then nothing will improve," Me Werner said.
Mr Werner said he felt compelled to unite the Melbourne community in the wake of the ABC staffer's death.

"When I saw the news that Jill's body had been found (on Friday) ... it really struck me, and I just wanted to get together with people in a show of solidarity and peaceful, quiet defiance to say we're not going to cower in fear, and we're not going to give up hope for society," he said.
Maureen Roberts, 67, who marched with her husband Tony, held roses and wore a specially-knitted orange, green and white scarf in a tribute to Ms Meagher's Irish homeland.
"My heart just aches for Jill and her family, and we just felt we had to be here, it's very moving," Mrs Roberts, who also has Irish heritage, told AAP.
Police at the rally struggled to estimate the sheer size of the crowd, but one officer directing traffic said numbers had swelled to "tens of thousands".
